The glandular milk tissues in the breast are organised into 10 – 20 comparments like a lemon, each comparments has one milk duct. Sometimes milk ducts clog (perhaps due to solidified milk that causes the blockage of the milk flow). This condition results in one or more small lumps on the breast that my hurt upon touching.

- Secretion of little or no milk for baby that affects the breastfeeding establishment.
- Untreated clogged milk ducts will make mommy’s breast sore and swollen causing fever and affecting mommy’s health. If not treated intime, this condition will continue and lead to mastitis or breast abscess. Mommy then needs to be hospitalized for pus drainage.
- Mommy’s will suffer from severe psychological consequences and postnatal depression when she is unable to breastfeed due to breast engorgement.
WHO WILL HAVE THE CLOGGED MILK DUCTS
All women are at risk of postpartum breast engorgement, especially non-lactating mothers immediately after giving birth.
IDENTIFICATION SIGNS
- Mommy’s breasts have one or more hard lumps.
- Getting more and more hardened and painful.
- There is little or no milk secretion, even with squeezing.
- Sometimes the condition is accompanied with fever.
WHEN DOES MOMMY RECOGNIZE BEING CLOGGED MILK DUCTS?
From 2nd to 4th day after giving birth. However, it can still happen in the next months due to mommy’s choice of bottle feeding instead of direct breastfeeding in preparation for her resuming working.
